Weekly Ongoing Activities:
Women's Self-Defense Classes: April 1st through May 27thSince last summer, the Church of the Messiah has been hosting self-defense classes offered by Michele Hax to community members young and old. For her spring 2008 session, Michele is offering FREE training to 5 pairs of mother/daughter, aunt/niece, female mentor/mentored couples -- with the youngest of the pairing between the ages of 13 and 21. These one hour classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. from April 1st through May 27th. Enrollment is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, click here. Celebrate the Feast of the Ascension: May 1stBecause Ascension is 40 days after Easter, it always falls on a Thursday, and sometimes it's difficult to schedule worship. This year it falls on Thursday, May 1st and we are blessed to be sharing our celebration with neighboring St. Matthias Church. They will join us at Messiah for a service at 7:00 p.m., followed by a dessert reception. Lee Ann+ will be the celebrant and St. Matthias' rector, Eleanor Holland+, will preach. Both choirs will join together to sing for the service. Spring Clean-up Day: May 3rdEvery spring members of the Church of the Messiah hold a clean-up day. Any help is always greatly appreciated, and all levels of ability are welcome and needed. We'll be focusing on 2 projects this year: outside yard work, including mulching, weeding, and hedge-trimming (bring your tools!). The inside project is the much-needed painting of the sanctuary walls. For more information, please see Randy Steppe for details or call 410-426-0709. Potluck Lunch: May 4thWe love to eat together at the Church of the Messiah, and have a potluck lunch on the first Sunday of the month during the program year. Please join us after the 10:30 service in the Lower Hall, and bring a dish if you can. Every one is welcome. Centering Prayer: May 12thCentering Prayer will meet on Monday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to share in this time of silent meditation. We meet in the Family Room, which is downstairs, for one hour. Instruction is provided. Cafe Conversation: May 18thCafe conversations take place around our round tables, with a designated host at each table guiding the conversation with specific questions. Vestry members will host a conversation on Sunday, May 18th at 9:00 a.m. to discuss what it means to be included and excluded. They have been talking about why or why not we should become a "Welcoming and Affirming" Parish; that is, be added to the diocesan list of parishes who welcome and affirm Gay, Lesbian and Transgender persons. We are having this conversation because we are trying to be faithful to our call (in our Vision Statement) "to respectfully listen to one another." The vestry feels it is vital to hear from all of you. Our hope is that the process will help us all grow in Christ, whatever the outcome may be. Please plan to join us. A continental breakfast will be served. Appreciating Spiritual Gifts: May 21stThe Bible says that we all have spiritual gifts. What
are they and how do we use them? Join us for this conversation on two
Wednesday evenings for an hour and a half, in the Upper Hall: May 21st and
May 28th, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This offering is a follow-up to
our April classes on spirituality and spiritual disciplines, but you do not need
to have come to those in order to come to these. Please let Lee Ann+ know
if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.
Appreciating Spiritual Gifts: May 28thThe Bible says that we all have spiritual gifts. What are they and how do we use them? Join us for this second Wednesday evening conversation in the Upper Hall on May 28th, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This offering is a follow-up to our April classes on spirituality and spiritual disciplines, but you do not need to have come to those in order to come to this. Please let Lee Ann+ know if you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.
